Destination overview
Maafushi is one of the Maldives' most popular local (non-resort) islands, offering an affordable alternative to the ultra-expensive private-resort experience the Maldives is famous for. It has budget-to-mid-range guesthouses, a public "bikini beach" (a designated area where swimwear is allowed, since it's otherwise a conservative Muslim community), plus snorkeling, diving, sandbank/dolphin cruises, and day trips to nearby uninhabited islands and resorts. It's a good pick for travelers who want turquoise water and white sand without resort-level prices.
Currency
Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), symbol Rf or MVR
US Dollars are widely accepted everywhere, including hotels, restaurants, and tours — many prices are even quoted in USD
ATMs available on Maafushi (a few, sometimes with limited cash/downtime) — safer to bring some USD cash as backup
Cards accepted at most guesthouses and dive shops, but small local eateries may prefer cash
Climate
Tropical, near-equatorial climate — hot and humid year-round with minimal temperature variation:
Dry season (Nov–Apr): Less rain, calmer seas, more sunshine — driven by the northeast monsoon
Wet season (May–Oct): More rain and wind, driven by the southwest monsoon, though showers are often short and interspersed with sun
Temperatures stay fairly constant year-round: roughly 26–31°C (79–88°F)
Best time to visit

December to April — best overall: driest, sunniest, calmest seas — ideal for snorkeling, diving, and island-hopping; also peak season (busier, pricier)
May to July — decent shoulder window: still swimmable, occasional rain, better prices
August to October — wetter and windier, rougher seas can affect boat trips and diving visibility, but noticeably cheaper
Note: unlike Thailand, Maldives seasons are relatively mild swings — even "wet season" often has plenty of sunny hours, so it's less of a dealbreaker than in more monsoon-heavy destinations
